Something odd is happening - I am trying to post a follow-up to Iain's post on this thread, but when I open it, it is a post by Jock. Well, never mind, I'll speak to Iain here - Me again, I'm afraid. You write of Beckfoot as being part of a 'large estate'. Is there text evidence for this, or are you surmising? As far as I can see, Beckfoot has a garden (quite large), with lawns down to the river and boathouse, and a stable block and courtyard. It's not what I would call a large estate, just a 2 to 3 acre garden at most, maybe not that.
