"I've always been interested in being close to the ground," he says, sipping tea in the cool of his hut. He grew up nearby, the son of a solidly middle-class family, who grew their own vegetables, kept chickens and sparked his interest in self-sufficiency. His child acting faltered in the early 1970s after he played Boy Roger in Swallows and Amazons - "'It's a shark! It's a shark!' That was me."
