"They" always want to fit you into their mold. If he is not actually harming anyone, why are they bothered? The "popular culture" always want you to sink into their misery, debt, bad food and uncomfortable conditions that they call "normal".
Interesting sad story - I have known many people like that - they were there first, the area got "developed" and the original person was persecuted for their lifestyle.
