I lack your detailed knowledge of the history of drawings in AR books, and the only thing I know is that he couldn't draw faces so as I turn a page I laugh to myself to see everyone facing away! But to me those simplistic sketches - which I couldn't achieve - are so perfect for the tone and nature of the books. Anything more sophisticated would somehow detract from the utterly absorbing nature of the text.

I watched the S&A film (how many years ago was that?) with concern because I feared it would be too nuanced. But I thought the treatment was perfect and caught the spirit as well as the content of the tale. If only 'they' had filmed the whole SA&D's series. Excluding the more unreal books which I can't like. But I acknowledge that I have a very pragmatic mind and what others see as a world of imagination I see as simply unreal. Probably my loss. Fascinating.

Joe
