I agree, Mike & Joe, about the way AR's illustrations fit with the books. However I remember reading that AR took Clifford Webb to all the locations, therefore his drawings may be good representations of the actual locations as seen through CW's eyes. CW was a well-regarded illustrator.

However I feel that AR created a gentle ambience by drawing horizontally whilst CW tended to draw vertically to fill the portrait layout of the books. This creates it's own pressure.

I have not seen any of the Steven Spurrier pictures for SA that were rejected by AR leaving only the maps to be published. I believe they were published in a now OOP Amazon Publications book.
