lowered the mean level of Coniston as a flood prevention measure. Before the adjustment, after a few days heavy rainfall, farmers with low lying fields could find their sheep grazing in a swamp.

I think that, with a higher level, the marshy area near Brown Howe ( SW Coniston ) would have made a fine horseshoe bay - complete with a sharp rock at the right hand side entering the bay.
