Thanks for the chart, Jon - this is useful. However, much as I have enjoyed the discussion on the preponderance of unmarried and no-longer married persons in AR's stories, I remain convinced that the real reason for this is internal, and lies in AR's own history rather than in WWI or flu. AR's first marriage was a disaster, and I wonder whether he ever really got over this, despite his much happier second marriage? Was he perhaps suffering from emotional damage, so that he could only bear to invent characters who were emotionally unattached? He had to have some married characters, but I don't feel that he was very interested in them. The chief married characters are Cdr and Mrs Walker, but we rarely see them together and they are almost treated as separate individuals.
