Ahhh - those memories of that period in history that Sir Winston
Churchill once referred to as "The recent unpleasantness."

It was the slogan of conservation during WWII.

Cars were left in the barn, up on blocks, with battery and tires removed. Not sure where they went, but at least were put where they were less subject to "permanent borrowing." That car would stay just that way "for the Duration." Amazing how many times that phrase came into use.

Those were the days of great stress, loss, pain, and endurance. We can be glad that for the sake of our childhood friends, who will remain forever in our hearts as being near and dear to us, that they existed in that calmer time between the wars, when they could afford at their ages to ignore those rumblings from across the Channel. They have captured the carefree joys of childhood that we, by re-reading those precious stories, can also regain those memories of our own carefree childhood. For that chance to "return with us now to yesteryear" we will forever be grateful for AR for his making such trips of the mind so real, so very real, as we again relive and enjoy All Things Ransome.
