Interestingly enough the same quote, slightly abbreviated, is on the back of the dustjacket of my recently bought (2000) hardback of Swallowdale.

My daughters, having minds of their own, albeit wrong-headed ones, have resisted reading Ransome precisely because I suggested that they try him. A blurb like that would only have encouraged them in their resistance.

And yes, Peter, while you and many others don't read blurbs, others do and it seems singularly counter-productive to put a quote like that anywhere on the books if it could put off even a single reader. Do you consider non-spirited children don't count when it comes to encouraging them to read Ransome?
