Are Port and Starboard actual members of the Coot Club?

For me this doesn't matter. What I would call a 'group' is a group of children tightly knit by family or continuous close friendship - thus the Amazons are a 'group', so also the Swallows and the Ds, and the Eels, and, I maintain, the D&Gs. Once you combine groups (eg 'S,A & Ds' or 'Coot Club'), you are bound to get both sexes in the combination. I think the significant thing is to look at the groups in isolation. Thus we have:

Amazons - all female
Swallows - mixed
Ds - mixed
Eels - mixed
D&Gs - all male

In addition, there are some 'free floaters' like the Mastodon, Jacky, and Tom Dudgeon. I don't count Port and Starboard because I have always considered them very lightweight and I don't know why AR wrote them in. I think their imitations of the Scottish housekeeper are a pain. Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, groups. The only all-male group is the D&Gs, and I reckon Adam has correctly identified age as a possible reason, although I suspect (and I lower my voice here) that the D&Gs' 'culture' excluded girls.
