My English dictionary gives several meanings for mere, one being pool or lake, another being a boundary. Both these are given as OE origin. If mere is in the context of pool or lake, why aren't all the lakes called something mere? Is it not possible that the boundary context is the correct one? Also why use mere for the town/ settlement name, since a settlement isnt a pool or lake?
