Regarding the town now known as Windermere. You ask why a town has this name, which has no "town" word in its name.
I believe the town now known as Windermere once had a different name until the railway was built. The railway company then pulled strings for the towns name to be changed to "pull in the tourists". The railway station became Windermere, as did the town.
I read this somewhere years ago. I hope this makes sense!
