Thank you, Jock. You have answered my query - there are indeed footpaths with public rights of way along the sea walls in both directions - but I can only offer a vague recollection in return. When I first scouted round the Backwaters, in 1963, I was ten years old and living in Clacton. I cycled to Kirby-le-Soken and pushed my dromedary along the sea walls, half expecting to meet the Swallows. Here was proof that the stories were real!

I do not remember the northerly dam being there at that time.

It is an odd thought, and not wholly a comfortable one, that I was closer to the Swallows in time, then, than I am to my ten year old self today.
