I think you only have to credit the source. If the photos are credited in the books, you can copy that credit; otherwise credit the books themselves. Number the photos you use, then make a bibliography. For each photo, make an entry such as this:

1. photograph of Arthur Ransome, back cover, Great Northern? (underline the title), Arthur Ransome, 1971, Puffin Books, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, England.

If you plan to reprint & sell, you may need permission from the publisher and/or AR's estate.

Now, someone who knows more should reply, so we can start a fine discussion on just exactly how to do this correctly!
