Hi Mike
From the end paper map in my 1952 edition of BS, The Roaring Donkey is shown at the end of a dyke which enters the Thurne on the south side, about 1/8 mile upstream from Kendal Dyke. The Roaring Donkey dyke is about 1/4 mile long and is almost at right angles to the Thurne.
If you would like a scanned version of this end-paper, please drop me an email.
Cheers, John G.
