I haven't done the calculations, but a quick look at this very fine map leads me to think that thinly-populated Maine is the top state in per-capita TARS membership, edging out my own state of New Hampshire (which has as many TARS members, but a higher population).

Since most Mainers live along or near the coast, and boats have always had a prominent spot in that state's history, perhaps this isn't surprising. Think what would have happened if Dick had gotten interested in studying lobsters!
