John - I think you are confusing the 'D&Gs' and the 'Ds'. The D&Gs were Norfolk born and bred. The Ds, ie the Callums, have been assumed to come from London because their train to Norwich came via Colchester and Ipswich, and they were described as 'city' children. It is possible, I suppose that they came from another city (Bristol, Birmingham, Canterbury?) and switched trains in London. If they had come from Brum, I think their journey would have been via Cambridge, not Ipswich. I wonder if there are any other London clues in the text? Is 'Scotland Yard' a clue?

I agree that the Callums' accent would have been BBC-type, but the BBC of then, not the BBC of now!
