Thank goodness he did have other ideas! I suppose I am going to get lambasted for this, but most of Britten's music to me is dire (I make an exception for the Sea Interludes, the only other things of his that listenable to are actually based on other composers tunes - Purcell etc). And before anyone asks, yes over the years I have tried and always ended up turning it off.
I'm afraid as I get older I find myself questioning his motives for writing so much for children, especially when you hear some of the reminisces of Aldeburgh men when they were boys.
Thankfully AR's reputation is intact, and that's why any adaptations ot another media need to be considered with great care.
