The G.A. may well have offered her card, because this was the practice she grew up with, but I have doubts about what would have happened to the card if the housemaid (if there was one) of a Lakeland house in the 1930s had taken it inside - probably scrutinised amid screams of laughter. To my knowledge, this sort of flummery had largely disappeared from all except the grandest houses by the 1930s - World War 1 put paid to all that. It is just possible, of course, that the old social practices persisted in Harrogate . . .
