whether you regard Bank Ground Farm as being the exception to the rule

In a way, it has to be, because there can be absolutely no doubt that 'Holly Howe' is Bank Ground. In an early draft of 'S&A' AR refers to 'Bank Ground' and not Holly Howe in the first sentence of the book:

'Roger, aged [five - crossed out] seven, and no longer the youngest in the family, ran in wide zigzags, to and fro, across the steep field that sloped up from the lake to Bank Ground, the farm where they were staying for the summer holidays.'

I assume that AR changed the name to a fictitious one to fit in with all the other names in the 'lake' books, which are also fictitious, although generic. The visual similarity has become impaired by subsequent alterations to the BG buildings, but a useful comparison can be made (if you've got the books) by looking at Clifford Webb's drawing for 'S&A' (shown on p. 15 of 'Illustrating AR' - an Amazon Publication) and Roger Wardale's photograph on p 22 of 'AR's Lakeland', although the viewpoints are not quite the same. (I would post these up, but I'm wary of the copyright issues.)
