In a long ago article in 'Mixed Moss' it is argued that Commander Walker had a low opinion of Dartmouth as a College, and had decided that it would be better for John to enter at 16 years old.

Walker is certainly a Commander in rank - in WD he sends a telegram to Captain Curtledge, Shotley, and there is only one Captain in a ship. He would not have been promoted straight from command of a destroyer to Captain of the most important Training College for Naval Ratings in the country.

However as the officer in command of a destroyer he would merit the honorific address of 'Captain' even though he did not hold that formal Naval Rank.

Commander of HMS Ganges, Shotley, was one of the most senior and important posts open to that rank, so that Ted Walker would undoubtedly have been promoted to full Captain within a couple of years after WD/SW.
