My "Authorities", Webster's Unabridged dictionary (published 1949) says: "1. Any large seagoing vessel." (Then there is a great full page diagram of the "Principal Ropes, Spars, Parts of Hull, etc.")
The other one is the Random House College Dictionary (1979)says: "1. a vessel, esp. a large ocean-going one propelled by sails or engines."
Then both No. 2 definitions are about ships with sails in both dictionaries.
In all this discussion of "ships" and "boats", nothing was said about Roger's favorite means of propulsion: engines. I think most ocean going "ships" nowadays are propelled by engines rather than sails - unless I have missed out on something ------
What ever happened to those experimental sailing ships with tall cylindrical revolving masts instead of traditional sails?
