I tend to agree with your comments. Such character is hinted at by AR in PM, both with Dot's conjecture during the trip in Scarab from the houseboat to Beckfoot, and in a couple of Nancy's asides.
If she had been prevented from marrying because she was bringing up Molly and Jim Turner, she would have missed the possibly moderating influence of her own "man about the house" and maintained the only standards she knew.
Dot's conjecture that the GA was actually frightened of something is consistent with the GA being determined to maintain "standards" in an era which was rapidly departing from her comfort zone as regards behaviour.
This is a mature viewpoint which I now hold, whereas when I first read the books, she was just a big problem to everybody. I suspect that is still how she is perceived by modern children, though I have no examples to quote.
