Apparent deterioration in quality of pictures in recent editions

I seem to remember that the copies I had as a boy (late 50's, early 60's, plus one 1940's PM that I bought for 3d at a jumble sale with the last four pages missing!) had much clearer illustrations than the copies (Cape hardbacks) that I have bought for my children.

My suspicions are increased when I compare the cover of WDMTGS with the pictures. On the cover, you can clearly read "NORD HINDER" on the lightship - in the picture in the text the name is indecipherable.

Am I right?
