Just for us to be clear: Kon-Tiki was a balsa wood boat, Ra and Ra2 were the reed boats of Thor Heyerdahl. See Kon-Tiki Museet or better still visit both the Kon-Tiki Museet and the Fram one! A good exposition of his achievements can be found by clicking on Heyerdahl in the left hand block of options, then Thor Heyerdahl. The reed built Ra boats of 1969 and 1970 actually superceded AR himself.

I think to say his theories were "exploded" is a bit strong: 50 years of further research and DNA evidence has shown the true origins of the Polynesian people, but Heyerdahl was exploring possibilities and proving the capabilities of balsa wood rafts.
