Not so sure about this. I assume you mean Mary Swainson and she and the Billies and Slater Bob seem to be carrying on occupations as they would have done in the 1930's without being in any way unusual.
In fact these occupations and the way people carried them out had existed for centuries with little change.

Back to SW and I find it an interesting book with the narrative ebbing and flowing with the tides. In modern parlance it might be said to be "Very East Coast". Anyone who can appreciate the beauty of muddy estuary marshes should appreciate this book.
In addition the graphic background of the gradually completing map provides an additional feature that is not present in the other books.
