That was the opening
in the reeds. He steered towards it. Presently there were tall
reeds on either side of them. They were in the Amazon River.
This says they entered the river first, then came to the boathouse AFTER entering the river.

Would seem to be a pretty definitive answer Ed, and deals with Iain's particular point.

I have a second problem, there seems to be a discrepancy between the text you have just
quoted and the Spurrier map and PM drawing which appears to have the boathouse in the
Amazon estuary. If we take the Beckfoot lawn (bounded by the boathouse on the right) as
sweeping down to the lake/Amazon estuary it gives Beckfoot splendid views across the lake.
If we take the boathouse to be up the Amazon river (with the reeds 'on either side of them')
then the view down the Beckfoot lawn would just be a reed bed with a wood on the other
side.

This drawing (and the Spurrier Map) doesn't seem to be quite consistent with the text.
