Here's a new topic to throw out. I was rereading SW this weekend, and began to feel that Nancy is jealous of the Swallows and deliberately sabotages their exploring. I am willing to posit that she regrets this- perhaps when she sees Titty, Roger, and Bridget in danger- and becomes helpful again at the end.
Nancy and Peggy have been completing their summer without the Swallows. We don't hear about (or read about!) any exciting adventures with the D's. They hear about the Swallows' wild trip to Holland. The Swallows have had real adventure, sailing a real ship across the actual ocean, and surviving all kinds of dangers. The Amazon Pirates have had no such adventures.
Nancy starts out as willing to explore. However, she is happy to join the Eels, as exploring isn't enough excitement. She neglects the planned survey of Peewitland in order to plan the corroborree. Excitement at getting the war she wanted? No, it was sabotage.
