Yup. Karabiners- they're the ones. I always thought of the name as referring to the whole hook, not just the mousing bit. And of course it's not just on mountaineering kit- the builders I see working around London use them too, on the hooks of their lifting gear.

But the purpose and practice is identical to 'mousing'.

Every day, something new to learn. Well, several things. Isn't it nice?
