Good catch, Ed! I'd missed that one. As an alternate hypothesis, perhaps it's not age that is the issue, but the fact that the Dixons are strangers to Dick and Dot. The D's travel alone in Coot Club, only a few months later. Mrs. Barrable seems to be known to them from previous visits. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong- I don't have the text in front of me)

My reading of the text is that Mrs. Callum was not raised in the Lake District, mostly on the negative proof that no one, especially Mrs. Dixon, ever mentions it.
