The legal status of LED navigation lights is as yet unclear. However, they are indeed widely used.
My 1937 gaff cutter MIRELLE(seen here standing in for LAPWING at a TARS event in 2003, with the late Ian Wright at the helm) carries 24v 90 watt incandescent side lights and stern light with a set of interchangeable oil lamps as back up - they were all made by Tung Woo in Hong Kong and began life on a Hong Kong harbour tug.
