And as you mention, in none of the illustrations has AR included a watch, wrist or pocket. I don't think it's the kind of detail that he'd have missed every time.
In WDMTGTS the illustration of John at the crosstrees has some thing at his left wrist. With this recent discussion of wristwatches I thought it might be a wristwatch found! But, I believe it is the handkerchief Susan put on John's wrist [left or right is not specified in the text] after he banged it up.
So, now I'm very impressed with AR's attention to illustrated detail!
