Curiously enough, I was discussing this very point yesterday, without having seen this thread.
I am not a naturalist, but there was a very good programme on cuckoos on the BBC about 20 years ago, which showed that they made the "cuckoo" call in the early spring, while they were still hiding in the woods (and laying eggs in strangers' nests). Then they become silent (or at least they don't sing "cuckoo" - I am not sure after all this time) but if you are observant, you can sometimes see them perching on a fencepost, and flying quickly to another. The film of that was very memorable.
