A thread behind, as usual, but I can corroborate that Pullman reads and admires Ransome. He chose WD as one of his favourites ina recent promotion with Waterstones bookstores, and this led to hs accepting an invitation to join the Nancy Blackett Trust. He mentioned that Nancy (the character) was one of Lyra's inspirations.
