Referring to p.90 of "Jib-booms and Bobstays" I find that the Big Five were real members of The Met at the real Scotland Yard. They were Chief Inspectors Arrow, Cane, Dew, Fox and Frost. [I wonder if the latter is the model for the TV copper played by David Jason?]
