In Swallowdale, as they approached the top of the mountain, they looked around them, taking in the large distances such heights made visible to them. Titty quotes from a poem:

"'And the red glare on Skiddaw roused the burghers of Car-
lisle.' Probably in those days they didn't have blinds in bedroom
windows."

"We know that one, too," said Peggy. "But not all of it. It's
worse than 'Casabianca.'"

"I like it because of the beacons," said Titty.

At least, I assume that is from a POEM as Peggy compared it with another poem, "Casabianca".

The question is: what is she quoting from? That refrain is not familiar to me.

By the way and on a different thought, over the several years that I have been daily scanning the TarBoard forum, I am grateful for all the help and understanding that has been found here. Being from the western shore of the Big Pond, the world of Ransome is, frankly, a foreign land, where certain usages of speech, spellings, customs, education standards, geography, are all unknown to us Colonials. All that made the reading of Ransome's delightful stories a big adventure for me as I experienced these strange differences. But with the TarBoard, and the patient ones that are more familiar with those things ready to help me grow in my understanding, my own appreciation of Ransome and his works have greatly grown. So I wish to take this opportunity, since I momentarily have the floor, to express my gratitude, and my thanks for all you have brought to me in this enrichment process.

Thanks, TarBoard.
