A couple of times recently I came across a website where you can type in a surname and see a map showing in what parts of the UK it's common.

It has taken a deal of Googling to find the site again now - it's not near the top of the list of hits you get for phrases like "surname distribution". For some mysterious reason the site belongs to the National Trust.

Anyway, the link below shows a map for Tyson, and it is indeed concentrated in Cumberland and Westmorland.
