Charcoal burning in the US ?

On the radio this morning (UK - BBC Radio 2 - 'Sounds of the Sixties') I heard the Monkees' version of 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', recorded in the 1960s. One verse goes:

Charcoal burning?? Were the Monkees referring to an American version of the Billies? 'Everywhere'?? Can a US Tarboarder assist here?
