Fascinating - just read the passage and it seems so strange. The person sketched is very Ransomey in some ways isn't he? Bradford rather than Leeds; but similar educations, city bohemian and country tramp (walking with gypsies, etc.) I thought I knew of most literary Bradfordians but have never heard of Peter Swainson. Nor is there any record of such a man in the 1891 or 1901 census (just checked). Nor any reference to his book on the internet other than here and in a transcript of Ransome's books.

And of course, Swainson is a name that was close to Ransome's heart.

I haven't read Hoofmarks of the Faun: is everybody else in it real? Is there any chance that Peter Swainson could be a semi-autobiographical invention?
