Hidden? That's crazy talk. It's just a broadcast channel. How difficult is it to switch over?

If all you have is an analogue set, it might be tricky. But most people can get Freeview, and if not, as we have computers, we can view BBC4 on the iPlayer (which is where I watched the Critics).

As for the three men and a dog; have you thought that this is a choice that people make? There's a reason that most channels are bland and dumb. Given a choice- which they are- that's what people freely choose to watch. Ghastly to think of it, but like the recession, it really is the public's fault. At least the Beeb kicks against the pricks, just a bit.

I used to get letters from viewers when I made Horizons and Panoramas. Some were quasi intelligent, but mostly they were pricks.
