Isn't the point that AR wasn't describing places as they were but as they suited the story? These are novels, after all, not dispatches. The classic example is AR's composite over-all geography. But Peel Island looks quite close enough. Okay, it's not quite right, but then in the story it's perfect. And the harbour is pretty damn convincing.

Later, in the Broads, he stuck much more closely to the real geography, and it was the same with SW. But not in the Lakes.
