I think everybody has their own Wild Cat Island. I sailed to Ramp Holme (and it was always my Wild Cat Island since I was a little kid staring at the maps). I can't deny that in many ways Peel Island is a better fit, not least because of Ransome's close connections with the island. But Wild Cat Island is something a little different from any of those "real" islands.

Talking of illustrations, there's a regular one in Swallowdale (Ransome's illustrations) when the island is right out in the middle of the lake (e.g. header for chapter three). It's not quite clear where Swallow is sailing from but the hills in the background suggest they're at the head of lake. In which case, what are the details on the two promontories? The one on the right hand side of the picture looks a little like Storrs Temple. Of course this might just be my Ramp Holme prejudice at work...
