Two related items to make note of here:

First, see how a section of old rusty iron railing can get
recycled.

1. In WH CH4, the section of railing was used in the Igloo
as a rod across the fireplace from which to hang the
kettle in the fire.

2. In WH CH13, parts from an old iron railing were used by
the blacksmith to become runners on Dick's sledge that
Mr. Dixon and Silas had just built.

3. In PP CH29, a rod from an old railing was broken into four
pieces and these used to create a seating for holding the
crucible in the blast furnace to melt the gold.

Second Item: Uses of a knife with a file in it.

1. In WH CH4, Nancy used her file to cut a rod from an old
railing for the igloo fireplace.

2. There is no mention as to how the railing was cut to
provide the runners for Dick's sledge, so we might
assume that this cutting was done by Mr. Dixon himself.

3. In PP CH29, John used the file in his pocket knife to
put nicks into a piece of old railing so it could be
bent and thus broken for use in the blast furnace.

These uses of an old rusty iron railing were at first a bit
difficult to imagine because I had had no concept of what
that iron railing looked like, since such a fencing material
is not used in my part of the world. This concept of a
railing was one of those things that was "new" as a feature
of that other part of the world that I was not familiar
with.

This concept of such a railing was finally brought to light
recently as I began to notice such a thing in some
photographs that Tony Richards had put on the internet
in his

which has been very helpful in giving me reality views of
the Lake District that Ransome's words had provided for me
by creating some sort of mental image that was greatly
inhanced by seeing Tony's work with real photographs.

For those not able to see the real thing in the Lake
District, I have selected this picture from Tony's
collection that quite well shows an iron railing used as
fencing material. Seeing this here, I can well see how
parts could have been used by our various Ransome characters
for their special purposes.
