i have no doubt that being scientific about anything Ransome is good fun, just as travelling hopefully is sometimes best, but given the way that his mind worked, science hasn't much to say about that. AR drew rattletrap circa 1942, at a time when he didn't even have a car! His early cars with badly dinted mudguards were in the fairly distant past. In 1933 he bought a year-old Austin, and if my memory serves, he replaced that fairly quickly.
I believe AR deliberately drew a car that could not be recognised as having an original but had every appearance of illustrating the text (as my old art master used to say, 'If it looks right, it is right.'
