Thank you for reminding us of your article, Claire.
Hopefully you can include AR’s marked up postcard of Gondola as part of your final article.
A couple of other points you may wish to include in your revised article, is that in chapter 13 of WH, the houseboat is described as “Once upon a time it had been a steamer, a little passenger launch carrying visitors to and fro on the lake.”
This describes the Gondola exactly. The Esperance was Schneider’s personal boat and then a boat used to convey the guests of the Ferry hotel.
Although AR would have been very familiar with the exterior of Esperance on Windermere, the Esperance does not seem to have developed an AR connection until it was used for the BBC 1963 S&A serial. The Gondola could not be used because at the time it was derelict.
I was reminded on seeing a rerun of Ben Fogle’s clip on S&A yesterday on BBC1 yesterday morning, that for the 1974 film, neither Esperance nor Gondola were used. Indeed the Gondola was still unusable.
Instead they remodelled Lady Derwentwater (not surprisingly a Derwentwater launch) to act as the houseboat. This launch was returned to original condition after filming and still provides trips on Derwentwater.
It is worth noting that before the Gondola’s re-launch in the early 1980’s, the hull has to be totally replaced (using the original as a pattern) and a new steam engine built to power the boat.
