Well, I ordered the £2.49 eBook version of Brambleholme Summer direct from Lulu, partly
to see what would happen, and partly to see if the book is any good ;-)
There seemed to be no way of ordering it direct from my iPhone, unlike the Kindle books,
so I ordered it using my ancient steam-operated G5 PowerMac. To say that the buying and
downloading process was 'clunky' would be an understatement! After the download I had
to download Adobe Digital Editions, but before I could download ADE, I had to complete
a registration process with Adobe. Then there was a period of clicking around on ADE which
seemed to need to download the book again. Finally after what seemed like half the day, but
was probably only a couple of hours, I was happily reading the book on my Mac.
The book is terrific, an excellent bedtime story for children and well worth getting hold of.
But I don't want to read it on my computer at home. I want to add it to my iPhone library
to read when waiting or flying. Now Lulu heavily promote their 'multi-device support'.
The whole Lulu experience was a nightmare compared to the ease with which I can download
Amazon's Kindle Books on either iPhone or Mac and then read them on both devices.
The bottom line? If you have young children or just feel young at heart, get the Brambleholme
series. You won't be disappointed. But if you want the digital books, pay an extra 71p and buy
the Amazon Kindle editions!
