Have you tried Kobo Vox eReader? Not only can you read the books you choose (with some limitations) free of charge, you can also check your email and input search questions wherever you have a WIFI area. Alas, no free AR works yet, but give them time. I consider the Kobo far superior to Kindle. I have two Kindle ereaders and never use them.
