I was interested to read the verdict of Owen's friend. Indeed, not everyone is thrilled with the restored Cutty Sark. In a national press article last weekend, the vessel was described as “Disney Sark”, and criticised for having a 30-foot high steel tower alongside to hold the lifts (!) and the air-conditioning plant (!) 28 steel girders have been bolted to the sides of the ship so that “a corporate hospitality venue” (!) can be created. The elegant lines of the vessel have, it was reported, been obliterated by a smoked glass screen.

In fairness, I have not seen the restoration but I am beginning to wonder whether it might have been better to let the old ship die with dignity after the fire disaster. The news editor of Classic Boat has described the whole thing as a “funfair ride”.
