Dick's example shouldn't be followed unless you know the other vessel is skippered by Nancy. The helmsman of the give-way vessel may not know the rules, may have misread the situation or may simply not be paying attention. The helmsman of the stand-on vessel should remain watchful and ready to take evasive action. I've had to once or twice.
