Parkinson's Law explains why vehicles drive on the left in all civilsed countries. In the past it was usual to wear your scabbard on the left so that you could draw your sword with your right hand. Thus when mounting a horse, you would get on from its left side "unless intending to face the back, which was not usual". So when you moved off, the horse would be on the left side of the road.
